When in Reykjavík, start by taking a walk-along the main drag of Laugavegur, Reykjavík’s downtown pedestrian street, and you’ll find most of the noteworthy local shops of design, outdoor garments, jewellery and memorabilia.
By including the Grandi by the port area, you have a good picture of where to shop for the best local brands in Iceland.
Let’s go shopping: Start with the Laugavegur neighbourhood.
Iceland’s premium combination of fashion, style and quality outdoor clothing is
66°N, located at no 17 and again close by where the name of the street is actually Bankastraeti. We start there at no 17 and move up Laugavegur to 37 and 39, where you’ll see next door neighbours
Aftur and
Farmers and Friends. Aftur has stood for cutting edge urban design since 1999. The brand is known for thoughtful ways with recreations and sustainability. Look for the Kría jewellery brand while shopping in Aftur.
Farmers and Friends is a trendy urban-country living comfy design. It’s all about warmth and style and local materials like Lopi, the wondrous Icelandic wool, which they use for their special take on the Icelandic sweater, Lopapeysa.
Next on to number 59,
Kormákur and Skjöldur, two local celebrities and their ultimate gentlemen’s store and every cavalier’s dream. The staff is sincere, nicely attentive and genuinely like you to feel welcome in this warm store that takes you a bit back in time. You should specially look at the suites made of their new, marvellous Icelandic tweet.
The backstreets connecting to Laugavegur is where you find the rest of the pack. Close to Kormákur and Skjöldur is the high-end fashion boutique KronKron at Laugavegur 63b, just around the corner. The owners are the designer duo Hugrún and Magni, known for vibrant and colourful collections catering to the Reykjavík’s upper crust and true victims of fashion.
Two more jewellers with our special mention are OrriFinn on Skólavörðustígur 34, very close to the big church Hallgrímskirkja. Wearable, unisex and just, very beautiful jewellery.
And on Klapparstígur 40, Hildur Hafstein workshop and boutique. Given here Scandinavian and Spanish background, expect exuberant and elegant design.
The best shop for memorabilia, Rammagerðin is on Skólavörðustígur which btw is the nicest street leading up to the big church.
Bear with us, only two left and both out on Grandi port area: Steinunn is Iceland’s most celebrated designer. Early in here career, her craft and skill were held in esteem by houses like Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and La Perla, but since 2000 she’s been bringing her collections to own boutique and shows making this world a bit more elegant.
